Hiking: What to pack in your backpack

Posted on September 20th, 2016 by admin in Hiking Trip Ideas & Tips

When packing your backpack for hiking space is an primary concern. The need to have all of the required items available when you need them is a real concern. The need to keep the backpack light and compact is also very important. These two needs often collide, but with proper planning and preparation you can pack what you need and have space to spare.

Food is often one of the first things that come to mind when packing for any hiking trip. Snacks that hold up well to heat are a good choice. Choose snacks that are compact and well packaged.

Packing a change of clothing is another important item to pack. Make sure to keep clothing in a water tight wrapping or plastic bag to keep them dry. Choose the most compact clothing that is appropriate for the predicted weather condition.

Water is a critical item to pack in your backpack. Allow enough water for more than your planned hiking trip. Unplanned detours and delays happen often and drinking water is something you do not want to be without.

Consider the length of your planned hike and choose and appropriate backpack. Consider if you will need to pack a sleeping bag and if so choose the most compact bag appropriate for your weather conditions. Also consider if you will need a tent. A first aid kit should be on your packing list, any needed medications, and basic emergency supplies and a cell phone.

Pack light, plan ahead and try to plan for all situations while always keeping in mind lighter and more compact options that are available to pack make packing your backpack a success.
